ATTENTION VETERANS AND ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY: Iowa DOT proudly supports our veterans and active duty service members. If you are an active duty military member, an honorably discharged veteran, or a veteran with a permanent 100% service-connected disability rating, you may be eligible for exemptions from certain driver’s license fees. To avail these waivers, please renew your license in person and present the necessary documentation. View waiver eligibility requirements to determine if you qualify. For honorably discharged or disabled veterans who have previously submitted the required documentation in person, your fees will be automatically waived when you renew online.

As of May 7, 2025, the REAL ID requirement will be enforced. To fly within the United States or access certain federal facilities, you will need a REAL ID gold star on your driver’s license or ID, or another TSA-approved identity document such as a passport.
- To obtain your REAL ID gold star, a visit to an Iowa DOT location in person is necessary. Please bring additional required documents with you to ensure a smooth process.
