Job Summary

As a Patient Transporter, you will play a crucial role in the smooth and efficient operation of our hospital. Your primary responsibility will be to transport patients safely and respectfully between various departments, treatment areas, and rooms. This involves assisting patients in and out of wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, and vehicles, always prioritizing their comfort and safety. You will be an integral part of the patient care team, directly contributing to a positive patient experience. This position requires individuals who are physically capable, possess excellent communication skills, and are committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and patient confidentiality. We are currently hiring for both full-time and part-time positions to meet the growing needs of our community.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Patient Safety and Comfort: Demonstrate competency in critical thinking and technical skills to ensure patient safety and comfort during all transports. This includes safely assisting patients in and out of various modes of transport such as taxis, ambulances, cars, helicopters, wheelchairs, and moveable beds. Proficiency in lifting patients and safely transferring them between beds and transport equipment is essential.
  • Professionalism and Conduct: Maintain a neat, clean, and professional appearance in accordance with hospital and Central Transportation and Dispatch (CTD) policies. Uphold a high level of professionalism at all times, demonstrating respect and empathy in all interactions with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Proactive and Efficient Workflow: Take initiative to stay productive by actively seeking patient transport opportunities. Anticipate patient needs and proactively request next assignments, assessing patient readiness to minimize delays.
  • Communication and Radio Etiquette: Maintain constant communication by keeping the CTD radio on and wearing an earpiece at all times while on hospital premises, including breaks. Utilize proper radio etiquette, employing appropriate ten-codes and maintaining a pleasant and professional tone of voice in all radio communications.
  • Patient Identification and Confidentiality: Properly identify patients before transport, adhering to patient safety protocols. Acknowledge and strictly maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations and hospital policy.
  • Coordination with Nursing Staff: Communicate effectively with nursing staff by notifying them before leaving the floor for patient transports and upon the patient’s return. Sign patients in and out of each patient care area to maintain accurate tracking and accountability.
  • Assistance and Collaboration: Assist other members of the Central Transportation Department as needed, including supporting other transport functions and helping locate equipment to ensure timely patient transport.
  • Departmental Communication: Inform receiving departments in person upon a patient’s arrival, ensuring a smooth handover. Promptly notify nursing staff and/or technicians of any changes in transport status, such as refusals, delays, or changes in transportation mode. Keep the CTD Dispatcher informed of any delays, cancellations, or modifications in transportation plans.
  • Patient-Centered Care: Assume full responsibility for patient and non-patient transportation activities, contributing directly to patient care and a positive patient experience. Maintain a patient-centered focus, supporting the hospital’s mission, goals, and values.
  • Technical Assistance and Equipment Handling: Assist nursing personnel in positioning patients for various types of transports and ensure proper immobilization as required, managing associated equipment such as IVs and portable oxygen. Handle both patient and non-patient moves with the appropriate level of urgency.
  • Equipment Management: Ensure efficient equipment management by removing transportation equipment from patient care areas after use and returning it to designated storage locations. This includes stretchers, wheelchairs, and beds.
  • Efficient Work Practices: Perform daily work assignments efficiently, in an organized manner, and with a high degree of accuracy to optimize workflow and minimize delays.
  • Interdepartmental Collaboration: Interact professionally and effectively with physicians and other technical staff to provide quality, safe, and efficient patient care through seamless transport services.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Reporting: Promptly report any equipment malfunctions to the Dispatcher. Properly tag malfunctioning equipment and ensure its delivery to the Biomed department for repair.
  • Training and Competency: Attend annual refresher training and any required training to demonstrate ongoing competency in the safe operation of all equipment used for patient transportation. Equipment includes wheelchairs, stretchers/gurneys, TotaLift chairs, telemetry monitors, slide boards, air pals, gate belts, oxygen (O2) usage equipment, video chairs, and various types of beds.
  • Communication Systems: Answer pager requests in a timely and courteous manner, ensuring prompt response to transport needs.
  • Data Entry and Support: Assist the Dispatcher with data entry into the CTD computer system to maintain accurate transportation records.
  • Training and Mentorship: Assist the Supervisor with departmental training and orientation of new employees, contributing to a well-trained and efficient transport team. Train new employees on transportation data collection and maintenance procedures.
  • Equipment Proficiency: Demonstrate the capability to effectively and safely operate all equipment while transporting patients, including:
    • (1) Wheelchair: Operating feet and leg rests, armrests, and brakes.
    • (2) Stretcher/Gurney: Adjusting height (raise and lower), head area elevation, steering modes (steer and neutral), and brakes.
    • (3) TotaLift Chair: Adjusting height (raise and lower), chair positioning, footrests, transfer crank, and brakes.
    • (4) Telemetry Monitor Removal: Disconnecting leads and electrodes and safely handling the monitor.
    • (5) Slide-Board: Utilizing for safe patient transfers.
    • (6) Air-Pal: Operating the motor, mattress, and hose for patient transport.
    • (7) Gate Belt: Using for secure patient transport and ambulation assistance.
    • (8) O2-Oxygen Tank: Managing the tank, regulator, valves, O2 carrier, and exchanging tanks as needed.
    • (9) Video Chair: Adjusting height (raise and lower), chair positioning, footrests, seat belt, and brakes.
  • Professional Competencies: Must be able to perform the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies specific to the assigned unit or department, ensuring high standards of service delivery.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.

Required Licensure and Certification

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required within 60 days of hire. We can provide resources and support to obtain this certification.
