Louisiana DOTD Traffic Cameras Monitor I-20 Construction Zone Truck Ban

Motorists in and around Bossier City, Louisiana, are reminded by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and Louisiana State Police (LSP) about the ongoing prohibition of large commercial motor vehicles within the I-20 construction zone. This crucial measure, actively monitored by Louisiana DOTD traffic cameras, is in place to enhance safety and maintain traffic flow in the area undergoing significant rehabilitation.

Recent incidents involving 18-wheelers within this zone have underscored the necessity of this truck ban. Multiple crashes have led to complete closures of I-20, already constricted to a single lane between Hamilton Road and Industrial Drive due to the construction. These closures, often lasting several hours due to the complexities of heavy vehicle recovery, severely disrupt regional traffic and impede the progress of the vital infrastructure project.

Since the commencement of this major reconstruction in September 2023, both DOTD and LSP have consistently advised all drivers, particularly commercial truck operators, to utilize the designated I-220 detour. The decision to officially prohibit large commercial vehicles from the I-20 work zone was implemented in December 2023. This action coincided with phase 2 of the project, which introduced concrete barriers and narrower bridge crossings, further increasing the risks for large trucks navigating the reduced space.

This prohibition is a proactive step to safeguard all motorists and ensure the construction project remains on schedule. Despite clear and numerous signs indicating the truck ban and directing drivers to the I-220 detour, LSP has issued over 200 warnings and citations to truckers disregarding these regulations.

It is imperative for all drivers to remain vigilant of the dynamic traffic conditions, especially within construction zones. Eliminating distractions, maintaining safe following distances, adhering to speed limits, and never driving under the influence are critical for safety.
