Do you need to get to your doctor’s appointment but don’t have a ride? If you are a Health First Colorado member, Free Medical Transportation, known as Non-Emergent Medical Transportation (NEMT), might be available to you. It’s important to remember that NEMT is not for emergencies. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911 immediately.
Who is Eligible for Free Medical Transportation?
This free service is designed for individuals who are enrolled in Health First Colorado and need assistance getting to and from covered healthcare services. If transportation is a barrier to accessing necessary medical care, NEMT can help bridge that gap.
How to Schedule Your Free Ride
Planning ahead is key to utilizing NEMT. You should schedule your ride at least 2 days prior to your medical appointment. This allows enough time to arrange transportation and ensure you get to your appointment on time.
What Information You’ll Need to Book
When you call to schedule your free medical transportation, be prepared to provide the following information:
- Your full name
- Your Health First Colorado ID number
- Your date of birth
- The specific date you need transportation
- The exact time you need to be picked up
- The complete address of your pick-up location
- The name of your healthcare provider
- The full address and phone number of your healthcare provider’s office
It’s also important to let them know if you plan to bring a family member or caregiver with you to your appointment. This ensures appropriate accommodations are made for everyone traveling.
If you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, it’s crucial to inform your healthcare provider before arranging your ride. They may need to discuss your symptoms with you before your visit to ensure safety and proper protocols are followed.

Providing Feedback on Your NEMT Experience
To ensure the quality and integrity of the NEMT program, it’s important to be aware of driver guidelines. Your NEMT driver should:
- Only transport you directly to your appointment and then directly back home.
- Always take the most direct route to and from your destinations.
- Never offer you money, gifts, or any other form of incentives.
If you experience a driver acting inappropriately or not following these guidelines, it is important to report it. You can provide feedback to either Health First Colorado or the Colorado Attorney General’s office. Your personal information and identity will be kept confidential when reporting suspected fraud or misconduct.
