Optimizing Fuel Transport for Next-Generation Nuclear Energy

NANO Nuclear Energy Inc. has partnered with Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Service mbH (GNS), a leading German specialist in nuclear material management, to develop an advanced Fuel Transport solution. This collaboration aims to create an optimized transportation system for High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) fuel, utilizing NANO Nuclear’s exclusive fuel transportation basket design.

This strategic agreement focuses on designing a comprehensive transport solution capable of handling diverse HALEU fuel types. The project will encompass a detailed study examining the transportation of various materials, including uranium oxide, TRISO particles, uranium-zirconium hydride, uranium mononitride, and molten salt fuel, specifically for molten salt reactors. This initiative underscores NANO Nuclear’s dedication to improving the safety and efficiency of fuel transport within the evolving nuclear sector. GNS’s recognized expertise in radioactive material packaging and transport cask development is crucial for ensuring a robust, innovative, and regulatory-compliant transport system.

The scope of the agreement includes the conceptual design of a novel HALEU transportation system tailored to the unique characteristics of each fuel type. GNS will conduct an in-depth study providing a complete description of the transportation system, detailed component lists, conceptual drawings, thorough risk assessments, and precise cost estimations for design, licensing, and manufacturing phases.

This study will adhere to the stringent NRC Quality Assurance program, ensuring full compliance with nuclear regulatory standards. This commitment aligns with NANO Nuclear’s overarching strategy to establish secure and efficient fuel transport solutions for the future of nuclear energy. Furthermore, the agreement provides an option for GNS to perform an exhaustive analysis of four specific fuel forms: TRISO pebbles, uranium-zirconium hydride (U-ZrHx), uranium mononitride (UN), and molten salt reactor fuel salt, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to fuel transport innovation.
