Embarking on a new career path can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. For those considering a career in transportation, particularly in specialized fields, the initial training period is crucial. This week marks my first foray into the world of industrial gas transportation with CTI, a company operating under the umbrella of Kenan Transport Co. While I wish I could have provided daily updates on this journey, the intensive training schedule has kept me fully occupied. I’m eager to share my experiences and initial impressions of Kenan Transport Co. and their training program.
My training commenced last Saturday and continued through this morning, encompassing five intensive days. One of the most significant advantages, and a key factor in my decision to join Kenan Transport Co., is the home-daily schedule. This aspect is incredibly valuable, allowing for a better work-life balance while pursuing a professional driving career. The specific location I’m training at, CTI in Bozrah, CT, focuses on hauling three primary industrial gases: Liquefied Oxygen, Liquefied Nitrogen, and Argon. It’s worth noting that the product range might vary at other Kenan Transport Co. locations.
The training program itself is led by a seasoned professional, a trainer whose expertise is immediately apparent. With extensive experience as both a tanker driver and a 30-year veteran of commercial driving, his insights and guidance are invaluable. He effectively covers the fundamentals of liquid product handling, from the procedures for pumping liquids out of the tanker to the intricate process of refilling at the terminal. While initially daunting, the operational aspects proved to be quite straightforward, and I felt comfortable with the practical skills relatively quickly.
Currently, the area I anticipate requiring the most focus and refinement is the paperwork and record-keeping associated with each day and each load. Accurately documenting all relevant information is paramount in this industry. However, recognizing the repetitive nature of these tasks, I am confident that proficiency in paperwork management will develop with time and consistent practice. Alongside the practical training, the onboarding process has included the necessary employment paperwork, largely completed online for efficiency.
Looking ahead, upon successful completion of this initial training phase and sign-off from my trainer, the next step involves traveling to Ohio. There, I will participate in a comprehensive company and safety orientation program organized by Kenan Transport Co. This further investment in safety and procedural training underscores Kenan Transport Co.’s commitment to operational excellence and driver well-being.
My initial impressions of Kenan Transport Co. through CTI are overwhelmingly positive. The terminal where I report daily is well-maintained and efficiently run. More importantly, the people I have encountered – from trainers to fellow employees – have been welcoming and supportive. The shift schedule, from 1700 hours onwards, with shifts potentially extending to 10-14 hours, will require adjustment. However, the anticipated financial rewards associated with this role within Kenan Transport Co. are a strong motivator and justify the necessary lifestyle adjustments.
I intend to provide further updates next week, following a two-day break. I return to work on Saturday, ready to continue this learning journey with Kenan Transport Co.
Stay safe on the roads, and thank you for following my progress!
