Kentucky Driver’s License and ID Card Online Renewal: Your Guide by the KY Transportation Cabinet

Renewing your driver’s license or identification card in Kentucky has become more convenient than ever, thanks to the KentucKy Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). This guide provides essential information for Kentucky residents looking to renew their credentials online. Please review the following details to ensure a smooth and efficient renewal process.

Eligibility for Online Renewal with the KYTC

The KY Transportation Cabinet offers online renewal for various credentials, provided you meet certain eligibility criteria. You can renew your standard driver’s license, motorcycle license, or combination license, as well as your ID card online. This option is available up to six months before your card expires and for one year after the expiration date. To renew online through the KYTC system, ensure that all personal information on your current license, such as your name, address, and license class, is accurate and up-to-date. If any of these details have changed, you will need to visit a Regional office or renew by mail instead. It’s also important to note that if your license or ID has been lost or stolen, online renewal is not currently an option, and you will need to follow a different procedure as outlined by the KY Transportation Cabinet.

REAL ID Upgrade Information from the KY Transportation Cabinet

The KY Transportation Cabinet also provides information regarding REAL ID upgrades. Starting May 7, 2025, a REAL ID will be required for air travel within the United States, accessing military bases, and entering federal buildings that require identification. This federal requirement affects all individuals 18 years and older. The KY Transportation Cabinet encourages residents to determine if a REAL ID is necessary for their needs. To apply for a REAL ID driver’s license, permit, or ID card, a visit to a Driver Licensing Regional office is mandatory, as this process currently requires in-person verification and documentation as per federal guidelines and KYTC procedures.

Cards Not Eligible for Online Renewal as per KYTC Regulations

While online renewal offers convenience, the KY Transportation Cabinet specifies certain cards that are not eligible for this service. Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) and permits cannot be renewed online. Similarly, Voter and Homeless ID cards require in-person renewal. Licenses for individuals under 21 years of age (vertical format), and licenses for non-U.S. citizens also fall under the in-person renewal requirement. Active duty military personnel have a separate process and should use the Military Personnel Mail-in Renewal Form provided by the KY Transportation Cabinet for renewals while serving.

Payment and Address Verification through the KYTC Online System

For online renewals processed through the KY Transportation Cabinet portal, several payment methods are accepted, including Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express, for both debit and credit cards. A processing fee is applied, which is 1.5% for debit cards and 2.75% for credit cards. It’s reassuring to know that if your application is not approved for any reason, you will not be charged. However, once a renewal application is successfully submitted, refunds are not available. During the online application process, it is crucial to verify that your address is accurate, as your newly renewed credential will be mailed to the address you provide. The lifespan of your new card will remain consistent with your current license; for example, if your existing card has a 4-year renewal period, your new one will also be valid for 4 years.

Upcoming Vision Test Requirement for Renewals – KYTC Update

It’s important to be aware of an upcoming change announced by the KY Transportation Cabinet. Beginning January 1, 2025, a vision test will be mandatory for all Kentucky driver’s license renewals, including online renewals. However, the KY Transportation Cabinet has clarified that online renewals will still be available even after this change. Customers who successfully pass a vision screening with a vision specialist or a KYTC Credentialed Medical Specialist will be able to submit their signed vision form online as part of their renewal application. More detailed information and specific procedures regarding this new vision test requirement will be released by the KY Transportation Cabinet as we approach 2025.

By using the online renewal system provided by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, you acknowledge that you meet the eligibility requirements and agree to the terms and conditions outlined. Remember that online applications are for personal use only, and any fraudulent submissions are subject to prosecution. Please also note that you will not receive a temporary document after renewing your license or ID card online.
