Lynden Transport to Deliver U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree for Second Time

Lynden Transport, a leading name in Alaskan freight and logistics, is once again in the driver’s seat for a very special delivery. Nearly a decade after their first momentous haul, Lynden Transport has been selected to transport the 2024 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree from the vast wilderness of Alaska to Washington, D.C. This significant undertaking will be spearheaded by veteran Lynden drivers, including John Schank, who was at the helm during the 2015 delivery.

Veteran drivers from Lynden Transport, John Schank and Fred Austin, are ready for the Capitol Christmas Tree delivery.

This year’s tree, a gift from the Tongass National Forest in partnership with the Society of American Foresters, will embark on a journey from Alaska to the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Lynden Transport’s expertise in navigating challenging logistics and long-haul transportation makes them the ideal choice for this prestigious task. Adding to the Alaskan spirit of the delivery, sister company Alaska Marine Lines will initially transport the tree via their Southeast Alaska barge service to Seattle. From there, Lynden Transport will take over, commencing a national truck tour with planned stops across the country before reaching the nation’s capital.

Paul Grimaldi, President of Lynden Transport, expressed the company’s pride in being entrusted with this important mission. “Lynden is deeply rooted in Alaska, much like the very Christmas tree we are transporting from the Tongass National Forest. It’s an honor to once again support the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Tour, entrusting this special freight to our legendary drivers John Schank and Fred Austin, both stalwarts from our Fairbanks Service Center,” Grimaldi stated. He further emphasized the dynamic partnership of Schank and Austin, highlighting their extensive experience and positive approach, which promises to make this cross-country journey truly memorable.

John Schank, a name synonymous with Alaskan trucking excellence, brings a wealth of experience to this project. Recognized multiple times as Driver of the Year by the Alaska Trucking Association in 2014 and 2017, Schank has also received commendations from former Alaska Governors for his remarkable safety record. Having driven over 6 million accident-free miles, including extensive hauls on the demanding Dalton Highway, Schank’s expertise is unparalleled. “Carrying the tree in 2015 was a career highlight, and I am truly honored to have this opportunity again in 2024,” Schank remarked. He fondly recalled the community engagement during the last tour, especially the children who were captivated by the Christmas tree’s journey to Washington, D.C., and eagerly anticipates embarking on this year’s adventure in early November.

Austin, now a driver trainer and mentor at the Lynden Training Center in Fairbanks, embodies the company’s commitment to experience and mentorship. Affectionately known as the “Icon of the Alcan,” Austin’s dedication and enthusiasm are infectious. “I am thrilled to contribute to this significant project and am looking forward to connecting with people across the country,” Austin shared, eager to be part of this unique journey.
