Texas Transportation Commission Welcomes New Appointees

The Texas Transportation Commission has gained two accomplished members with the recent appointments of Alejandro “Alex” G. Meade, III and Steven D. Alvis by Governor Greg Abbott. These appointments, announced on March 21, 2023, signal a continued focus on strengthening Texas’s transportation infrastructure and policy. Meade will serve a term expiring on February 1, 2025, while Alvis is appointed for a term extending to February 1, 2029.

The Texas Transportation Commission plays a pivotal role in shaping the state’s transportation landscape. As the governing body of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the commission is responsible for crucial policymaking decisions. These encompass overseeing the vast Texas highway system, spearheading the development of a comprehensive statewide transportation plan, and fostering the growth of public transportation networks. Furthermore, the commission is tasked with adopting the operational rules and regulations for TxDOT, ensuring the efficient and safe movement of people and goods across Texas.

Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa voiced strong support for Meade’s appointment, stating, “I appreciate Governor Abbott appointing Alex Meade to the Texas Transportation Commission. He has made an excellent choice given the knowledge and experience Alex has with both the public and private sectors, as well as his banking and finance background. I am confident Alex will work tirelessly to provide transportation solutions that will take care of the needs of all Texans. I look forward to supporting him through the Senate confirmation process.” Meade’s extensive background in both public service and private finance positions him as a valuable asset to the Texas Transportation Commission. His prior experience as city manager for the City of Pharr and CEO of the Mission Economic Development Corporation, coupled with his current role as executive vice president of Texas Regional Bank, provides a unique perspective on the intersection of transportation, economic development, and community needs.

Adding to the commission’s expertise, Steven D. Alvis brings a wealth of business acumen. Senator Lois Kolkhorst commended Governor Abbott’s selection, noting, “I am grateful for Governor Abbott’s wise decision to appoint Steve Alvis to the Texas Transportation Commission. Steve Alvis should bring a wealth of business knowledge to the Commission and will be a great voice for my constituents and all Texans. His problem-solving talents will surely help push solutions to all of our state’s mobility challenges.” As co-founder and managing partner of NewQuest Properties and chairman of the Texas Facilities Commission, Alvis has demonstrated leadership and strategic thinking in large-scale operations and infrastructure development. His involvement with organizations like the Young President’s Organization and the International Council of Shopping Centers further highlights his extensive network and understanding of diverse stakeholder interests related to transportation and development.

The Texas Transportation Commission, with the addition of Meade and Alvis, is poised to continue its critical work in addressing the evolving transportation needs of Texas. Their combined expertise promises to contribute significantly to the commission’s mission of ensuring a safe, efficient, and reliable transportation system for all Texans. These appointments now await Senate confirmation, marking the next step in solidifying their roles in guiding Texas’s transportation future.
