Salt Lake City is proactively addressing Equity Transportation through the Westside Transportation Equity Study. This initiative focuses on evaluating and enhancing the quality of transportation infrastructure and solutions for historically underserved communities in the city’s Westside neighborhoods. These areas have the highest concentrations of minority populations within Salt Lake City, and in many cases, across the Wasatch Front region and the entire state of Utah.
Community members collaborate on a street mural in Salt Lake City's Rose Park neighborhood, part of the Westside Transportation Equity Study to improve equity transportation.
The study is a collaborative effort between Salt Lake City and key partners including the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), Utah Transit Authority (UTA), and the Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC). The core objective is to identify and implement strategies to better meet the diverse transportation needs of every community member, ensuring equitable access and opportunity.

Salt Lake City’s commitment to equity extends beyond transportation. The city government has launched numerous equity-focused programs targeting food access, digital inclusion, racial justice in policing, housing solutions, arts funding, and gentrification mitigation. Furthermore, the creation of a Chief Equity Officer position within the Mayor’s Office underscores the city’s dedication to overseeing and strengthening equity initiatives citywide.
UTA is also actively engaged in promoting equity through initiatives like low-income transit passes, the Committee on Accessible Transportation, strategic engagement with Hispanic/Latino and Spanish-speaking communities, and inclusive Travel Training Programs. Improving equity transportation and broader social equity in Salt Lake City is a continuous journey requiring collaboration and community input. Salt Lake City welcomes ongoing dialogue and feedback as these critical efforts move forward.
