Renewing your driver’s license or identification card in Kentucky has become more convenient than ever, thanks to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). This guide provides you with essential information on how to renew your Kentucky driver’s license or ID card online, saving you time and effort. Keep in mind that starting January 1, 2025, a vision test will be required for all license renewals, but online renewals will still be available for those who meet the vision requirements. Stay tuned for further details on how to submit your vision form online if you pass a screening with a vision specialist or KYTC Credentialed Medical Specialist.
Eligibility for Online Renewal
Online renewal offers a streamlined process for many Kentucky residents. You are eligible to renew your Kentucky driver’s license, motorcycle license, combination driver/motorcycle license, or ID card online if you meet the following criteria:
- Your renewal application can be submitted up to six months before your current credential expires or within one year after the expiration date.
- It is crucial that all personal information on your existing license or ID, including your name, address, and license class, is accurate and up to date. If any of these details have changed, you will need to renew in person at a Regional office or via mail.
- Unfortunately, if your license or ID card has been lost or stolen, online renewal is not an option at this time.
REAL ID Upgrade Information
Are you prepared for the REAL ID enforcement? Beginning May 7, 2025, the federal government will require a REAL ID compliant driver’s license, permit, or identification card to board domestic flights, access military bases, and enter federal buildings that require identification. If you are unsure whether a REAL ID is right for you, learn more about the differences between REAL ID and standard licenses.
To obtain a REAL ID for the first time, you must visit a Driver Licensing Regional office in person. Upgrading to a REAL ID cannot be done through online renewal.
Cards Not Eligible for Online Renewal
While online renewal is convenient, it is not available for all types of Kentucky credentials. The following cards are not eligible for online renewal and require in-person renewal or renewal by mail:
- Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) and permits.
- Voter and Homeless ID cards (in-person renewal is mandatory).
- Licenses for individuals under 21 years of age (vertical format licenses).
- Licenses for non-U.S. citizens.
- Active duty military personnel should utilize the Military Personnel Mail-in Renewal Form for renewal.
Payment Information
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet provides multiple payment options for online renewals. You can use the following payment methods:
- Visa
- MasterCard
- Discover
- American Express (debit or credit cards accepted)
Please be aware that a processing fee will be applied to your transaction: 1.5% for debit card payments and 2.75% for credit card payments. If your application is not approved for any reason, you will not be charged. It is important to note that refunds are not issued once a renewal application has been submitted.
Address Verification and Card Lifespan
During the online renewal process, you will be required to verify that your current address is correct. Your newly renewed credential will be mailed to the address you confirm. The lifespan of your new card will be the same as your previous license or ID card. For example, if your existing card was on a 4-year renewal cycle, your new card will also be valid for 4 years from the renewal date.
Important Notice
Please be aware that upon completing your online renewal, you will not receive a temporary document. Your official new license or ID card will be mailed to your verified address.
By proceeding with an online renewal application, you are confirming that you meet the eligibility requirements and agree to the outlined terms and conditions. It is important to remember that applications are for personal use only, and any fraudulent submissions will be subject to prosecution.
