Starting your journey with MnDOT often begins with the Transportation Associate (TA) position. To be eligible for a TA position, you may need to hold a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), Class A or B without air brake restrictions. Obtaining this permit is a crucial first step for many roles within MnDOT’s transportation maintenance sector.
For those who already possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) without air brake restrictions and have at least one year of relevant work experience, the Transportation Generalist position may be the ideal starting point. Some positions also require tanker endorsements, so be sure to list all relevant endorsements on your resume when applying.

- Transportation Generalist (Entry-Level): $24.39 – $30.60/hour; $50,926 – $63,893/year. This role involves entry-level technical and skilled work across transportation design, construction, and maintenance.
- Transportation Specialist (Intermediate-Level): $26.28 – $33.98/hour; $54,873 – $70,950/year. This level involves more complex technical and skilled work, potentially including lead responsibilities.
- Transportation Specialist (Senior-Level): $27.74 – $37.83/hour; $57,921 – $78,989/year. Senior roles involve highly specialized or advanced technical work within MnDOT.
