WCSD Transportation Updates: What Families Need to Know

The Washoe County School District (WCSD) has announced significant changes to its transportation policy, set to take effect on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. These changes, approved by the WCSD Board of Trustees, primarily involve adjustments to student walk zones, meaning more students will now be eligible for school bus services. This update aims to provide greater access to transportation for students across the district.

Key Changes to WCSD Transportation Walk Zones

One of the most impactful changes is the shortening of walk zones. Previously, students living within certain distances of their school were expected to walk. The new policy significantly reduces these distances, expanding bus service eligibility.

Expanded Bus Eligibility for Elementary and Middle School Students

Starting February 20, 2024, the distance criteria for bus ridership have been revised for younger students. Elementary school students residing more than one mile from their assigned school are now eligible to ride the bus. Similarly, middle school students living more than two miles from their school can also avail themselves of school bus transportation.

No Change for High School Walk Zones

It’s important to note that the walk zone policy for high school students remains unchanged. High school students must still live more than three miles away from their school to qualify for bus service.

Student IDs Now Required for Bus Riders

For safety and attendance tracking purposes, student identification is mandatory for all students riding the bus. This measure ensures the well-being of students and accurate record-keeping on bus routes.

Special Education Transportation Unaffected

Families of students receiving special education transportation services will be relieved to know that these services are not impacted by the walk zone adjustments. Special education transportation will continue as scheduled, including for pre-kindergarten students.

Understanding How These Changes Affect Your Student

With these new transportation guidelines, it’s natural to wonder how they will affect your child’s commute to school. The WCSD has provided resources to help families determine their eligibility and understand potential changes.

For Families of Students Not Currently Riding the Bus

While a greater number of students are now eligible for bus transportation, it’s important to understand that not every student will be affected. To determine if your student is now eligible for bus service due to the walk zone changes, the WCSD recommends using the e-Link system. This online tool will provide specific information about your student’s transportation eligibility.

For Families of Current Bus Riders: Expect Potential Adjustments

If your student already utilizes the school bus service, they will continue to ride the bus. However, current bus riders at all grade levels should anticipate potential changes to their bus routes and schedules. These adjustments may include:

  • Changes in bus pickup and drop-off times: With expanded ridership, bus schedules may be adjusted to accommodate new routes and student stops.
  • Changes in bus pickup and drop-off locations: Some bus stop locations may be modified to optimize routes and efficiency.
  • Changes in bus numbers: Students should confirm their bus number as routes are updated.

To ensure a smooth transition, it’s crucial for students to carry their Student ID every day when riding the bus. Additionally, students are advised to arrive at their designated bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled pickup time.

Updated route information for AACT/IB and SWAS programs can be found on the respective tabs on the Wcsd Transportation website. Updated Winter Bus Stops information will be available starting February 20, 2024.

WCSD Transportation Eligibility and Distance Measurement Explained

To clarify the criteria for bus service eligibility, the WCSD has outlined the following conditions based on the shortest walking distance between a student’s residence and their school:

  1. Elementary School: Eligible if the shortest walking distance is more than 1 mile.
  2. Middle School: Eligible if the shortest walking distance is more than 2 miles.
  3. High School: Eligible if the shortest walking distance is more than 3 miles.

Have Questions? Contact WCSD Transportation

The WCSD encourages families to check the e-Link system before February 20th to familiarize themselves and their students with any new transportation procedures and understand how these changes may affect their family’s routine.

For any further questions or concerns, the WCSD Transportation Department is available to assist. Please contact them directly at (775) 337-7769.

Troubleshooting e-Link Access

Some users have reported issues accessing e-Link on District networks. If you encounter a login request while trying to access e-Link, the WCSD recommends trying a different web browser such as Firefox or accessing the information from outside the district network.

Obtaining Student IDs for Bus Riders

As student IDs are now required for bus riders, families should ensure their student has a valid ID. If a student does not have one, parents can contact their school to request a student ID. Most schools can print a physical ID or a barcode that students can use to scan for bus ridership. The Infinite Campus Student Portal also provides a barcode that students can access digitally for bus scanning.

WCSD Transportation Request Procedures

For general transportation requests, all necessary forms are initiated and submitted electronically by the school to the transportation department. Once transportation is arranged, the bus driver will provide the student with a transportation attendance form. Parents are required to complete and sign this form, and the student should return it to the driver.

The procedure for requesting transportation for Special Needs students is similar. All Special Needs transportation forms are also completed and submitted electronically by the school.

Finding Your Student’s Bus Stop and Schedule

To easily locate your student’s assigned bus stop locations and arrival times, utilize the e-Link system: e-Link. This online tool provides up-to-date bus schedules and route information.

By implementing these walk zone changes and providing clear communication, WCSD aims to enhance student access to transportation and ensure a smooth and safe commute for all eligible students.
