The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), in collaboration with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to explore potential development opportunities at the Anderson Regional Transportation Center (RTC) in Woburn. This initiative aligns with the City of Woburn’s proactive planning and economic development efforts in the surrounding area, paving the way for a development that can synergistically enhance the existing operations of the Woburn Anderson Transportation Center.
For over two decades, the Anderson Regional Transportation Center, a multi-modal transportation hub jointly owned by Massport, MassDOT, and the MBTA, has been a cornerstone of high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) transportation services. Looking ahead, the Woburn Anderson Transportation Center is poised to remain a strategically vital asset for the region’s evolving transportation network.
As the joint venture carefully considers strategies to optimally accommodate the anticipated growth of transportation services at the Anderson RTC, the potential for compatible development emerges as a promising avenue. Such development could not only coexist with but also potentially enrich the functionality of the transportation center. Therefore, the JV is actively seeking Expressions of Interest from experienced developers to gain deeper insights into the development potential of this unique site. Key considerations include the site’s specific environmental characteristics, gauging current market demand, and assessing the overall feasibility of harmonizing present and future transportation demands with innovative development concepts at the Woburn Anderson Transportation Center.
The responses gathered from this RFI will be instrumental in shaping future planning endeavors for the Anderson RTC. This includes informing the decision-making process regarding the necessity and scope of a formal procurement process for development, potentially culminating in a Request for Proposals (RFP) at a later stage.
The Anderson RTC, encompassing 26.2 acres, is strategically situated at 100 Atlantic Avenue in Woburn. This key transportation hub boasts a comprehensive train and bus station, ample surface parking facilities, and enjoys excellent accessibility to major transportation arteries, including I-93 and I-95. Furthermore, it provides seamless rail connections to North Station in Boston via the MBTA’s Lowell Line, and Amtrak’s Downeaster service extends to Brunswick, Maine. For air travelers, Woburn Logan Express offers direct and convenient bus service to Logan International Airport, further solidifying the Woburn Anderson Transportation Center as a vital multi-modal transit point.
Interested parties are invited to submit their responses to the RFI by the deadline of April 30. Following the submission period, an evaluation committee comprising representatives from the three aforementioned agencies will meticulously review all responses. This evaluation will be crucial in determining the appropriateness and direction of a subsequent RFP for development at the Woburn Anderson Transportation Center.
